Fifth grade: Each fall students participate in a pre-assessment of drama skills which include pantomime, character development, collaboration in rehearsal, scene work, and ability to evaluate themselves and others with drama vocabulary. Students recreated a scene from the classic story, Tom Sawyer.
Fourth grade: The students participated in a pre-assessment of drama skills which included pantomime, character development, collaboration in rehearsal, scene work, and ability to evaluate themselves and others. The story used was the African folktale, Tug of War. Students also began identifying character traits in the scenes and could explore using those traits in Writer's Workshop within their classroom.
Third grade: The students began by creating environments (ie pirate ship, circus, bowling alley) in small groups with pantomime. Then through an African folktale, A Story, A Story, the students created scenes in groups of three and four creating dialogue. They are beginning to learn how to collaborate and problem solve.
Second grade: The students are beginning to strengthen their ability to concentrate during narrative pantomime. Pair play continued with students improvising dialogue during simple scenes from stories such as Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock.
First Grade: Through “pair play,” first graders are creating characters with their bodies and voices. They are learning to react to each other and listen to dialogue. A few of the stories used include Head to Toe, Quick As A Cricket, and Three Little Hawaiian Pigs.
Kindergarten: The focus in drama this past month has been on creating animal movements for the stories such as Quick as A Cricket, Tip-toe Joe and 5 Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree. We’ve also focused on expressing emotions through facial expressions. The students are still learning about working in a personal space and freezing.
