Kindergartners are working on physicalizing the characters in the story, Caps For Sale. In the story they are learning about the importance of close observation in mirroring movements for the story. Later they will retell this delightful tale using simple stick puppets. Working with partners, the second grade students are creating scenes for the story, Sam and Tigers. The students enjoyed bartering as well as bargaining at the flea market. Afterwards they pantomimed trying on the fine clothes they had purchased as well as acting out ways to outsmart the tigers. The students in third grade continue to work on the folktale, The Three Sillies, or the story Those Shoes. In The Three Sillies they are creating scenes and dialogue in collaborative small groups, focusing on the creating larger-than- life characters through voice and movement. In Those Shoes students are focusing on the actions and reactions of characters as they try to make decisions about sharing. Fourth graders are creating the world of The Twits. This Roald Dahl favorite allows students to create odd characters that love to trick one another. Ask your favorite fourth grader what is the scene they have enjoyed playing the most. Fifth graders asked if they could create a “Mannequin Challenge.” We embraced this idea and the students created frozen tableaus that convey energy and emotion using environments such as playground, theatre, library and sports arena. We videod each Challenge and as they watched themselves students were able to reflect on the effectiveness of their use of facial expressions, frozen actions and levels in space. |
